Rinzai and Soto are two major schools of Zen Buddhism in Japan. The main difference between the two lies in their approach to meditation. Rinzai Zen emphasizes the use of koans, which are paradoxical statements or questions used to provoke enlightenment, and places a strong emphasis on rigorous meditation practices. Soto Zen, on the other hand, focuses on the practice of shikantaza, or "just sitting," where practitioners sit in meditation without any specific goal or object of focus. Additionally, Rinzai Zen tends to be more hierarchical and formal, while Soto Zen places a greater emphasis on everyday mindfulness and the integration of Zen practice into daily life. **

Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings emphasize the practice of mindfulness in everyday life, with a focus on bringing awareness to each moment and finding peace and happiness in the present. He also emphasizes the importance of engaged Buddhism, which involves applying mindfulness to social and environmental issues. In contrast, Soto and Rinzai Zen traditions focus more on formal meditation practices and the study of koans, with less emphasis on applying mindfulness to daily activities and social engagement. Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings also often incorporate elements of Vietnamese culture and language, while Soto and Rinzai Zen traditions are rooted in Japanese culture and language. **
