Description:Great Britain had been buying increasing quantities of tea from China, but it had few products that China was interested in buying by way of exchange. As the great depression squeezed resources, many argued that the only way for Japan to progress was to go it alone. But as war conditions deteriorated, Japanese idealism died, and most Asians only saw imperialism in another form. Economic and political control by leading powers reached almost the entire globe, for, in addition to colonial rule, other means of domination were exercised in the form of spheres of influence, special commercial treaties, and the subordination that lenders often impose on debtor nations.
